Correctly called Hedera, ivy is a genus of 12-15 evergreen climbing or ground-creeping woody plant in the araliaceae family. Ivy is mostly found clinging on to building and usually creating a sheet over the brick. Ivy is found covering the ground of woodland areas, it greatly lessens the effect of frost, enabling birds and woodland creatures to forage during bitter spells.
If you were to ask anyone what the down fall of natural ivy is, they would all say the same thing – the speed of growth! Natural ivy grows at such a speed it very quickly takes over its surroundings.
