So, you've got this gorgeous artificial flower arrangement going on, but something feels missing, right? Well, fear not, because we're here to spill the beans on how to elevate your faux flora game to the next level.

Getting creative with artificial flower arrangements can be a fun, easy way to add beauty and personality to any space, without the fuss of real flowers. Here are some of our favourite alternative things to put in the bottom of your vase to create a showstopping centrepiece.

Water

Sounds weird right? One of the biggest selling factors of fake flowers is that they don’t need water, but if you’re going for realism, then a little bit of H2O might be what’s standing between you and a believable bouquet.

We’re often asked, is it okay to put water in a vase with fake flowers? Well, the answer is twofold. Whilst it can be fine to put faux flowers into water for short periods of time, the wire inside the stems can rust over prolonged intervals. Your options here are to coat the ends of the stems in clear nail polish to protect them or experiment with a clear resin or gel to give the illusion of the wet stuff!

Weighing down fake flowers in water can also be a bit tricky since artificial blooms aren't designed to absorb water like real flowers. However, if you're determined to create the illusion of water in your vase, here are a few creative ways to keep your fake flowers submerged:

Add decorative stones or pebbles

Place decorative stones or pebbles at the bottom of your vase before adding water. These will provide weight and stability to keep your fake flowers from floating to the surface.

Use waterproof glue

Apply waterproof glue to the bottom of the fake flower stems before placing them in the vase. This will help to anchor the stems to the bottom of the vase and prevent them from floating.

What do you put in the base of a fake plant?

Similarly to fake flowers, when it comes to adding filler to the base of a fake plant, you have several options to choose from depending on the look you want to achieve and the type of plant you're working with. These are some of our favourites:

  • Moss or moss mats: Adding moss or moss mats to the base of a fake plant can give it a lush and organic appearance. Moss provides texture and depth while helping to cover any visible gaps or imperfections in the base of the plant.

  • Sand or gravel: Utilising sand or gravel at the base of a fake plant can add weight and stability while providing a natural and earthy aesthetic. Choose sand or gravel in colours and textures that complement your plant and enhance its overall appearance.

  • Decorative bark or wood chips: Incorporating decorative bark or wood chips into the base of a fake plant can add warmth and texture to your display. Choose bark or wood chips in natural tones to create a rustic and inviting look.

  • Faux soil or potting mix: If you're aiming for a highly realistic appearance, consider using faux soil or potting mix at the base of your fake plant. This can give the illusion of a potted plant and enhance the overall authenticity of your display.
