IThe festive season is the time when trend-following is at its highest, with each year having its own, distinctive colour palette or theme. In recent years, however, there has been less emphasis on the festive season promoting just one style, or colour palette.

What is trending in Christmas tree decorations?

From elaborate peppermint-inspired decorations, to traditional crimson reds and forest greens, we are going to break down some of the trends we have identified this year! So - without further ado - let's get stuck into this year's trending colours, themes and decorations...

Revival of the old: Traditional Christmas decorations

As far as Christmas decoration trends go, this one has truly stood the test of time - and this year, we believe it's coming back bigger than ever before!

This year, I've noticed a surge in nostalgia - from the revival of retro home decor to vintage fashion, and we believe this Christmas will be no different! Bring back the nostalgia and magic of your childhood Christmases' with traditional decorations such as classic gold, red and green baubles, tinsel and stunning red ribbon bows.

Nothing says a traditional tree quite like family heirlooms or hand-made decorations. Although many stores do offer intricate 'handmade looking' baubles, why not try creating your own!

If DIYs just aren't for you, some key indicators of 'special' or 'hand-made-looking' baubles may include: felt or cotton textures, beaded or embroidery details, and hand-painted accents.

Be BOLD: New Christmas decor trends

Colours:

Colour is IN - and a bigger trend than ever before! With patterns and colour becoming increasingly popular over Instagram, we predict some new and unique colourful trees to pop up this Christmas too!

Colour can be added into your Christmas tree through foliage and flowers! Although poinsettia is naturally the go-to, you could try switching it up this year by adding-in deep purple hydrangea heads.

Baubles:

Unique and non-traditional baubles have become more of a thing in recent years, with people featuring everything from donuts to sausage dogs on their trees. This year, we predict this trend to explode onto the scene, with every home featuring an unusual 'trinket' bauble on their tree.

This unusual theme doesn't have a set colour palette per se, however, in previous years, 'trinket trees' have been mostly baby pink with sweet treat-inspired baubles adorning a tree's branches.

Style:

We think the big bold trend of this year will be the maximalist tree!

Maximalism has exploded onto the Instagram home content creator scene, with many home influencers ditching their traditional new-build look for something more regal or retro-inspired.

We predict this year's maximalist trees to feature an abundance of unusual baubles in a variety of deep jewel tones, patterns and textures. Statement baubles may include exotic animals or artistic ornamental pieces, such as landmarks or statues.

I believe this year's maximalist trees will become a form of self-expression and art.

Looking for some elegant Christmas decorating ideas? Well, the maximalist theme may be for you! Maximalism can look regal if you choose to switch out the multi-coloured bauble approach for baubles of different textures instead. For an elegant look, we recommend opting for a colour palette which features opulent midnight blues and golds!

If you're someone who loves all things unique, then go for something different this year and feature a non-traditional tree in your home!

Autumnal woodland trees

Autumn or Fall, is traditionally celebrated more by our friends across the pond, but, in recent years, autumnal decor has grown in popularity in the UK too.

Last year, many of the UK's leading Christmas homeware stores featured a woodland collection of some kind, and this year, we believe this to continue.

Create your own advent calendar

There are bags of fun to be had with this DIY and it’s a more sustainable option than the usual calendars found in the supermarket. DIY advent calendars may not be a new concept, however, with the help of social media, they definitely have become a trend that has resurfaced in recent years!

With the revival of the Lenox Spice Village taking homes by storm, we predict many DIYer's will try to capture the magic of the Spice Village in the style of an advent calendar; creating a collection of 25 miniature homes or gingerbread houses, each with a sweet treat or indulgent chocolate inside!

If you like a more cosy or homely feel, why not try creating some festive felt or fabric baubles. To do this, you could either find a tutorial online or buy a kit! This DIY is a great way to incorporate past seasons decor into your new look by recycling old holiday napkins, tableware, etc.

Trendy Christmas tree alternatives

Traditional Christmas trees drop needles which are less than ideal around children and pets. If an artificial tree is just too bulky for your space, why not try switching things up with a fun festive cactus or palm. You can spruce them up just the same using lights, tinsel, baubles and more for a quirky take on the classic pine.

If you’re not feeling the tropical Christmas vibe, why not try a miniature tree in replacement or in addition to your Christmas tree!
