Trending colours & themes

IThe festive season is the time when trend-following is at its highest, with each year having its own, distinctive colour palette or theme. In recent years, however, there has been less emphasis on the festive season promoting just one style, or colour palette.

What is trending in Christmas tree decorations?

From elaborate peppermint-inspired decorations, to traditional crimson reds and forest greens, we are going to break down some of the trends we have identified this year! So - without further ado - let's get stuck into this year's trending colours, themes and decorations...

Revival of the old: Traditional Christmas decorations

As far as Christmas decoration trends go, this one has truly stood the test of time - and this year, we believe it's coming back bigger than ever before!

This year, I've noticed a surge in nostalgia - from the revival of retro home decor to vintage fashion, and we believe this Christmas will be no different! Bring back the nostalgia and magic of your childhood Christmases' with traditional decorations such as classic gold, red and green baubles, tinsel and stunning red ribbon bows.

Nothing says a traditional tree quite like family heirlooms or hand-made decorations. Although many stores do offer intricate 'handmade looking' baubles, why not try creating your own!

For more information on how to create your own DIY baubles, check out our suggestions here.

If DIYs just aren't for you, some key indicators of 'special' or 'hand-made-looking' baubles may include: felt or cotton textures, beaded or embroidery details, and hand-painted accents.

Colours:

Colour is IN - and a bigger trend than ever before! With patterns and colour becoming increasingly popular over Instagram, we predict some new and unique colourful trees to pop up this Christmas too!

Colour can be added into your Christmas tree through foliage and flowers! Although poinsettia is naturally the go-to, you could try switching it up this year by adding-in deep purple hydrangea heads.

Baubles:

Unique and non-traditional baubles have become more of a thing in recent years, with people featuring everything from donuts to sausage dogs on their trees. This year, we predict this trend to explode onto the scene, with every home featuring an unusual 'trinket' bauble on their tree.

This unusual theme doesn't have a set colour palette per se, however, in previous years, 'trinket trees' have been mostly baby pink with sweet treat-inspired baubles adorning a tree's branches.

Style:

We think the big bold trend of this year will be the maximalist tree!

Maximalism has exploded onto the Instagram home content creator scene, with many home influencers ditching their traditional new-build look for something more regal or retro-inspired.

We predict this year's maximalist trees to feature an abundance of unusual baubles in a variety of deep jewel tones, patterns and textures. Statement baubles may include exotic animals or artistic ornamental pieces, such as landmarks or statues.

I believe this year's maximalist trees will become a form of self-expression and art.

Looking for some elegant Christmas decorating ideas? Well, the maximalist theme may be for you! Maximalism can look regal if you choose to switch out the multi-coloured bauble approach for baubles of different textures instead. For an elegant look, we recommend opting for a colour palette which features opulent midnight blues and golds!

If you're someone who loves all things unique, then go for something different this year and feature a non-traditional tree in your home!

Autumnal woodland trees

Autumn or Fall, is traditionally celebrated more by our friends across the pond, but, in recent years, autumnal decor has grown in popularity in the UK too.

Last year, many of the UK's leading Christmas homeware stores featured a woodland collection of some kind, and this year, we believe this to continue.

This theme comprises of earthy tones, like beiges, browns, greens and oranges and natural materials like paper, wood, wool, jute and cotton. Special or unique rustic woodland baubles combine a mixture and real and ornamental elements, such as natural bristle animal baubles.

We do believe the autumnal woodland theme will continue to grow in popularity because of its nods to Scandi interior design.

What are the top three Christmas colours this year?

The top three trending colours of this festive season are dependent on what theme you would like your tree to be, however we predict trends to be in favour of a jewel-toned colour palette. From the top three themes of this year, we have identified this years trending colours to be...

Traditional: Ruby reds, forest greens and golds

Maximalist: Midnight blues, deep plums, ochre yellows

Woodland: Forest greens, soft beiges and dusky oranges

How to decorate for Christmas on a budget?

Decorating on a budget can be tricky, but not impossible! Whether you're new to DIY or something of a DIY expert, we have some trendy Christmas DIY's for you to get stuck into. Let's begin...

Create your own advent calendar

Christmas stocking - blog post by Blooming Artificial

There are bags of fun to be had with this DIY and it’s a more sustainable option than the usual calendars found in the supermarket. DIY advent calendars may not be a new concept, however, with the help of social media, they definitely have become a trend that has resurfaced in recent years!

With the revival of the Lenox Spice Village taking homes by storm, we predict many DIYer's will try to capture the magic of the Spice Village in the style of an advent calendar; creating a collection of 25 miniature homes or gingerbread houses, each with a sweet treat or indulgent chocolate inside!

If you don't feel confident in your DIY skills, or an advent village just isn't for you, there are many other ways you could create a trendy DIY advent calendar.

You can easily create your own advent calendar using envelopes, paper bags, or miniature drawers and decorate with ribbon, lights, pinecones or foliage. If you’re feeling creative you could even use twine to hang your calendar like a garland for extra style points!

Some popular filling ideas include:

  • Favourite chocolates

  • Miniature versions of your favourite alcoholic drink

  • Small scented candles

  • Christmas snacks

Create your own baubles

Nothing captures the magic of Christmas quite like a handmade bauble, so why not take the time this year to create some of your own!

If you want your DIY bauble to look refined and stylish, try decoupage. Decoupage is not only a fun DIY, but it's also a great way for you to refresh your old Christmas decor, and transform it into something new!

If you like a more cosy or homely feel, why not try creating some festive felt or fabric baubles. To do this, you could either find a tutorial online or buy a kit! This DIY is a great way to incorporate past seasons decor into your new look by recycling old holiday napkins, tableware, etc.

Trendy Christmas tree alternatives

Festive branch arrangement

Traditional Christmas trees drop needles which are less than ideal around children and pets. If an artificial tree is just too bulky for your space, why not try switching things up with a fun festive cactus or palm. You can spruce them up just the same using lights, tinsel, baubles and more for a quirky take on the classic pine.

If you’re not feeling the tropical Christmas vibe, why not try a miniature tree in replacement or in addition to your Christmas tree! To create your mini tree look, grab yourself a real or artificial tiny pine tree or miniature rosemary shrub and begin decorating like you would a regular Christmas pine. To decorate your mini tree, you can either purchase miniature fairy lights and baubles, or you could get creative and tie string around your favourite candy and chocolates to create some edible baubles.

If you're looking for more minimalist tree alternative, then try filling oversized vases or jars with water and add a bough of pine foliage.

Spruce up your table for Christmas

A huge part of Christmas day is spent around the dining table and (whether you're hosting a family or not) extra care should be made to make your Christmas dinner feel extra magical!

The festive season is the time for extravagant tableware - don't just decorate your table on the special day though! Dining ware such as chargers and napkins help to style your table to make it look Christmas-ready during the whole holiday. For more information of decorating your kitchen space for Christmas, check out our 'decorating your dining table with artificial flowers' blog post!

Depending on your style, you may wish to incorporate themes from your tree into your tablescape too! Toys - like a miniature train set, may be a fun and inventive addition to your table, or keep it natural with pinecones and dried eucalyptus foliage.

Finish the look with two or three Christmas centrepieces, candles and voila! Your tablescape is complete!

How can I make my house look my Christmassy?

Making the outside of your home Christmassy can be a lot easier than expected - no 'Deck the Halls' level-effort necessary!

If you have any trees or shrubs in your front garden then try adding some outdoor fairy lights to them, or - if they are of the more branchy variety - add some festive fun with large baubles!

If that is just too simple for you, then try adding fake snow spray to your windows and adding some festive holiday ornaments to your lawn.

Whatever your style, your front garden decor will be incomplete without a festive fun door wreath.
