How to trim artificial flower stems

Almost all single stem flowers or foliage arrive with full-length or uncut stems, which are probably too long for your vase. Trimming them to fit is easy, and we’ll show you how in our quick step-by-step video below.

What you’ll need:

  • Pliers or wire cutters
  • A vase or container
  • Faux flower stems

Trimming your stems

Measure your stems

Before you start trimming, figure out how much to snip off the bottom of your stems. For bouquets, keep some taller stems in the middle to create a focal point, with shorter stems around the edges for balance.

You can use a tape measure for precision or simply place your stem next to your vase and eyeball the length.

Start cutting your stems

Using strong pliers or wire cutters, snip your stems gradually to fit your vase. Cut a little at a time to avoid trimming too much, and keep checking the height until you’re happy.

Use strong pliers or ask for help

Thicker stems, like our lily stem or sunflower stem, may need extra strength or a second pair of hands to hold them steady. Repeat until all stems are the correct height.

Bend out your flowers and foliage

Flowers and leaves are packed tightly for safe delivery, so they may need a little TLC. Gently bend out each leaf and frond until your arrangement looks full and natural.

Add your stems to your vase

Once trimmed and arranged, you can tie the stems with decorative ribbon, twine, or leave them loose. Add your flowers to the vase and watch them brighten up your space instantly!
